Centennial Gala – Committee

2017 Committee

The following individuals were appointed to the 2017 Centennial Gala organizing committee. The Sikh Foundation of Canada thanks them for all their hard work and countless hours spent organizing the 2017 gala.

Harneet Panesar

Chair

Harneet Panesar is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and currently works at Hydro One Inc. and serves as a Trusted Advisor for the company’s largest customers. Harneet holds an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Toronto. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) specializing in Strategic Management from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Harneet is an executive member of the Professional Engineers Ontario– East Toronto Chapter, the licensing and regulating body for engineering in the province. He also serves as Chair of the Government Liaison Program in the East Toronto Chapter. This is Harneet’s second year on the Centennial Gala Committee. He has previously served as the Marketing Director for the Sikh International Film Festival in Toronto.

Manraj (Manny) Mukkar

Vice Chair

Manny Mukkar is an associate in a law firm located in Greater Toronto Area where his practice focuses primarily on Corporate Commercial Law, Wills & Estates, and Real Estate.

Manny holds a J.D. from Bond University and an LL.M from Southwestern University. This is Manny’s second year on the Centennial Gala committee.

In his spare time he enjoys travelling and cooking. Manny is also sports enthusiast and can often be found on a local basketball court or golf course.

Jenifferjit Sidhu

Social Media Marketing and Brand Communications

Jenifferjit Sidhu is currently the media spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service. She has an extensive investigative and community policing background. She holds a double major honors degree in Sociology and Law & Society from York University.

Jenifferjit is a certified Power Yoga Vinyasa instructor and provides free weekly yoga classes to at-risk youth living in high priority areas within the GTA. She also serves as a spokesperson for numerous philanthropic foundations and is involved in causes and initiatives that support the education and empowerment of at-risk youth..

Simmer Anand

VIP Outreach

Simmer Anand was born, raised and educated in technology-rich Waterloo. He attended Wilfrid Laurier University, where he studied Honours Political Science and Economics. At his convocation, Simmer was awarded an Academic Gold Medal from the Faculty of Arts, for achieving the highest cumulative GPA in his graduating class of 700+ students.

Upon graduating, Simmer’s political ambitions led him to pursue an opportunity with the Government of Ontario. During his four-year tenure at Queen’s Park, Simmer worked for Senior Cabinet Ministers as a Policy Advisor, including Deputy Premier Deb Matthews and International Trade Minister Michael Chan. Simmer currently works at Hydro One Networks Inc. as an External Relations Advisor.

In his spare time, Simmer enjoys baking, playing sports and staying active within the community. 

Gurpreet Parmar

Vendor Relations & Website

Gurpreet is an experienced clinical pharmacist working at a busy medical clinic which is Vaughan’s only interdisciplinary Family Health team. As a Geriatrics Pharmacist and a Diabetic Educator, she is extensively involved in providing chronic disease management with a focus on empowering her patients to live a disease free long life. She is passionate about serving the community and has held numerous community wide clinics on prevention of diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis. Her forte for public speaking is definitely an added asset.

Educated in the prairies, she recently moved from B.C, after enjoying the West Coast island life of Nanaimo. As an avid painter; a cooking enthusiast, she feels that both palates are strongly interconnected.

Ruby Sohi

Ticketing, Venue, Décor, Food & Entertainment

Ruby immigrated to Canada from London, England. She studied in the heart of London at City University, where she graduated as a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Media Communication Systems. This led her to a career with various communication agencies project managing high profile events and digital marketing campaigns for HSBC, Disney, British Airways, IKEA and British Telecom to name a few. 

Since moving to Toronto in 2009, Ruby launched a boutique event planning and communications agency; Royal Blue Events Management. She has since delivered a variety of different corporate events including multi-city symposiums (Toronto, Kingston, Waterloo, London, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver), outdoor festivals, award ceremonies, fundraising galas, launch events and lots more. Her most recent clients include Kraft Canada, Queen's University, TD and numerous non-profit organisations around the Greater Toronto Area.

Samsher Singh

Vendor Relations

Samsher Singh Sidhu is a certified International Baccalaureate Physics teacher who has taught both within the Greater Toronto Area, and at schools internationally. He has been an outspoken advocate for education and youth engagement in the community. 

He was part of the organizing committee that brought the 'Spirit Born', an exhibition celebrating Sikh heritage, to Parliament Hill in 2009. He has also previously served on the Sikh Centennial Gala Committee from 2008-2010, during which he performed with Signature from Britain's Got Talent during the Centennial Gala in 2010.

Gurveer Bains

Hospitality

Gurveer Bains is a current PhD student in health/medical geography with a collaboration in global health at the University of Toronto. Her research explores health literacy of chronic diseases within the South Asian population of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA); research which builds on previous studies she has conducted on the health of immigrant populations in Canada.

Prior to her doctoral work, Gurveer graduated with a Master of Arts degree from Queen’s University whereby her thesis focused on understanding cardiovascular disease risk factors within the Punjabi Sikh population of the Region of Peel. Gurveer also completed an Honours.

Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Toronto-Mississauga, where she was selected to serve as the Class of 2013 Valedictorian.

Gurveer enjoys giving back to her community and has volunteered as a Medical First Responder with the Erindale College Special Response Team (ECSpeRT) and Board Member with the Ban Righ Foundation at Queen’s University, among her participation in many other committees. This is Gurveer’s first year on the Centennial Gala committee.

Kuldip Bhangu

Volunteer Lead

Kuldip was born and raised in the UK before immigrating to Canada. She completed her BSc in Mathematics and Education from Loughborough University and then completed her Post Graduate Certificate in Education. She has deep experience working in academic environments as well as in training staff. Kuldip has undertaken projects centered on learning and development for professionals and other educators.

Harkeerat (Haki) Batra

Fundraising & Branding

Harkeerat (Haki) Batra was born and raised in Toronto, Canada and has graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a BSc in Marketing. He has a passion for startup companies and focuses on product development with a deep understanding of go-to-market strategies within the digital age.
