KOMAGATA MARU

Booklet

The Komagata Maru was a ship that arrived at the Port of Vancouver in May of 1914. Nearly all of the 376 passengers were denied entry and the ship sat in the harbour for two months before it was eventually forced to return to India. The Komagata Maru was chartered by a Sikh expatriate, Gurdip Singh, and there were 340 Sikhs, 24 Muslims, and 11 Hindu on board—all British subjects. The Canadian Government issued a formal apology for this incident in 2016.
